sociology 10-16 homework

1) There are differences between slavery, caste, estate, and class systems. Slavery is where a person is owned by someone else. This can either be voluntary or involuntary. There are many reasons why someone may be in slavery. Also, the conditions of their contract may differ as well. In caste a status is giving to a person at birth. Caste is an involuntary thing because one can’t change its status after it is given. Caste is widely practice in South Africa and India. On the other hand, during the medieval times in Europe there were different classes of wealth. This is exactly like what we know in American. What we know as the lower class is commoners, middle class clergy, and upper class nobility. In American we can be related to the class systems because we have classes based on wealth. All over the world there are social stratification.

3) There are many ways elites try and maintain stratification. They can control in two ways. The ways of controlling can either be soft control or by force. Soft control rulers didn’t have to use a lot of force in order to be followed. An example would be Charles Mason. His followers simply liked his ideas. His followers would even kill for him. An example of force control is Hitler. He wanted to protect his power by killing off the none blonde hair blue eye people. Both of these guys wanted to protect their power. They would withhold information from their followers. They also didn’t like to have their power challenged. The more their followers were educated the more they would criticize their leaders’ actions. When one person rebels from the leader more people will tend to follow. This could be very damaging to the elites in power. They want to maintain their power. Sometimes they will even watch their followers without them even knowing it. The rise of technology makes this very easy. The elite groups can tap into video camera systems to trace their followers everywhere they go. Anyone in power likes to stay in power.
